Lubrication technology and lubricants through the ages
Lubrication technology and the development of lubricants have changed considerably over time. In the early days of the Industrial Revolution, lubricants were generally simple substances such as animal fats or vegetable oils. They were used to reduce friction and wear on machine parts.
Over time, increasingly advanced lubricants were developed to meet the growing demands of modern machinery. The introduction of mineral oils and synthetic lubricants enabled better performance and efficiency. These new lubricants were more stable, more resistant to temperature changes and suitable for use under extreme conditions.
Technological progress also brought new challenges. Machines became faster and more powerful, operating at higher temperatures and under greater loads. This required the development of high-performance lubricants capable of meeting these demands while ensuring optimal lubrication. Lubricants continued to develop to further reduce friction, minimise wear and extend machine life.
